Amelie Mag asked:

Bowling is a popular sport among American men. The tools of the trade consist of a ball, shoes, bowling bags and other accessories. What are the characteristics of bowling balls? Can anyone make bowling balls in their own backyard or there is more to it?

A bowling ball is obviously a sphere, but the materials used to manufacture that sphere vary. Rubber, plastic, urethane, reactive resin are just some of the materials that can be used or combined to manufacture a bowling ball today.

There are different types of bowling: ten pin, five pin and candle pin. Each of them implies different types of bowling balls. The most widespread form is ten pin, and the bowling ball common for this sport has some different features as opposed to the others.

The regulations specify the weight of the ten pin bowling balls has to be less than 16 pounds or 7.2 kg. The diameter of the balls has to be 8.5 inches or 21.6 cm. As far as the physical aspect goes, the balls may look the same, but each of them may have a different weight.

Five pin bowling balls are manufactured according to other specifications. The weight of these balls needs to be between 3.25 and 3.625 pounds. The diameter is not exact and needs to be anywhere between 4.75 inches (12.1 cm) and 5 inches (12.7 cm).

The candle pin balls are even smaller than these, weighing only 2 pounds 7 ounces or 1.105 kg. Candle pin bowling is considered by many a greater challenge than the other sports because the ball is lighter than the pin, which weighs 2 pounds 8 ounces or 1.134 kg.

The bowling ball’s behavior on the lane is influenced by many factors. The most obvious of these factors is the player’s delivery. A player has many choices to make when launching the ball, but he has to know the roles each factor plays in the outcome.

Once the ball is out of the player’s hands, gravity takes control first. Once the ball reaches the surface of the lane, friction kicks in. The way player lets go of the ball and what forces he applies to it before influence the gyroscopic inertia. All of these factors need to be harmoniously combined to provide the best possible outcome when a player takes his shot: STRIKE.

Bowling balls come in different sizes. For average players that visit a bowling alley once in a while, using the balls found on the premises is common. But for the avid players, for which bowling is part of their lives, owning their own bowling ball is a necessity. Finding the bowling balls suited for your tastes can be difficult, but when you do, you also need to find bowling bags to match.

Bowling bags also come in different sizes, all of them manufactured to match different balls. Surfing the internet is probably the quickest solution you can go for in order to make comparisons and see a lot of interesting models. If you want bowling bags, balls, shoes, special towels and other unique accessories that appeal to your tastes, all at affordable prices, be sure to visit bowlingballsales.com.

Riley Hendersen asked:

Bowling shirts are quite unique. Anyone who knows anything at all about the sport of bowling should easily recognize most bowling shirts.

The main thing that characterizes a shirt as a bowling shirt is shape. Bowling shirts have a “box-cut” design. All bowling shirts have short sleeves. This keeps any fabric from getting in the way of the ball. Also, most bowling shirts have a pocket in front and a collar, which is a contrasting color.

A black and white bowling shirt lends itself to easy imprinting of personal or team designs. Imprinting designs is also usually cheaper on black and white shirts than it is on other colors.

The most basic reason to get a bowling shirt is to simply feel like a bowler. Often, bowling shirts have a certain retro, 50’s era feel, that immediately makes one cheerful and puts one in the mood to bowl. However, rest assured that bowling shirts have many more practical uses.

The most obvious use of a bowling shirt is to distinguish between individual bowlers or teams of bowlers during a competition. If each team has its own color or pattern of shirt and each team member has his or her name on their shirt, then it is easy for spectators to follow the action during the different competitions.

For the bowlers themselves, one of the most important factors is fit. A bowling shirt that is too loose risks the fabric getting in the way of arm movement or the ball itself. One that is too tight, on the other hand, restricts movement and causes discomfort. Bowling shirts should always allow free arm movement. After all, if a bowler can’t swing their arm then they certainly can’t bowl.

Another great feature of bowling shirts is their comfort. Most of them are made of cotton or a cotton blend. Someone in a professional bowling shirt is apt to be much more comfortable than someone in average clothing. Comfort should be one of a serious bowler’s top priorities. If a bowler is uncomfortable in any way it can be a distraction and hurt their game.

When it comes to adding a personal touch to your shirt, you have a couple options. You can either order a custom shirt online or, if you prefer to try a shirt on for size first before you buy it, you can visit your local sports equipment store. The staff at such a store can easily help you to find not only a shirt that fits properly, but one that is customized for your individual tastes.

For anyone, even the most amateur bowler, there is a certain sense of pride in owning your own bowling shirt. Anyone who sees you in your shirt will instantly recognize you as a bowler. For a lot of people, that would be reason enough, but, when the proper shirt can improve your comfort and accuracy and improve your over all game, you can’t possibly go wrong!

Justin asked:

ef=”http://teamsportsblog.com/2009/04/02/bowling-in-physical-education-class.aspx”>

Bowling in physical education class is a fun way to teach kids cooperation and coordination skills.  Physical Education bowling is different from regular bowling in many ways but the biggest difference is the equipment that is used.  Regular bowling balls and pins are not used.  What is used are rubberized plastic or foam balls and plastic or foam pins.  The balls that are used can weigh from 1.5 lbs to 5 lbs depending on the material they are made of.  These ball are made for physical education class only.  They are not made to be used at a real bowling ally.  Bowling physical education programs are recommended for grade levels 3-5.

There are a couple ways to play.

One way is sort of like soccer.  First you set up teams of about 5 depending on how many students you have.  Each team will have 4 rovers and 1 pin keeper.  The rovers stay out of the pin area and they use the balls to try to knock down the opposing teams pins.  They pass the ball and shoot by rolling the ball on the ground. Tossing or throwing the ball is not allowed.  The rovers also can block the opposing teams passes or shots using their feet or hands.  The pin keepers stay in the pin area and try to protect their pins and also pass the balls back to their team mates.  The game starts with pin keeper passing out the balls to their rovers who begin the game on their half of the court. The game ends when all of one teams pins are down. (See diagram below)

Rules:

Players must roll the ball to pass (no throwing the ball) Rover can only take 2 steps with ball in hand Rover can not enter the pin area Players are aloud to block passes or shots with hands or feet Pin keepers can arrange the pins anyway they want Adult supervision required

Items Needed:

Bowling Pins Bowling Balls Scrimmage Vests

You can play the way above or you can play with a bowling lane just like real bowling.  With this type of bowling you will want to get a bowling lane.  This is played just like regular bowling where you keep score with the number of pins knocked down.  You can also include strikes and spares.  The number of frames in regular bowling is 10 but you can modify this number to adjust for time constraints also if you have players taking turn setting up the pins.  Buying a backstop would be a good idea for this game.  The back stop will keep the pins in the same area so it will be easier to pick up the pins that are knocked down. You really have full creative control over this type of bowling to fit the number of students and time that you have.

Rules:

(No throwing the ball) Take Turns Adult supervision required

Items Needed:

Bowling Pins Bowling Balls Bowling Lane (Back Stop optional)

David H. Urmann asked:

Bowling balls are made exclusively for bowling. They are designed to offer the bowlers with a suitable and competent means of giving out their bowling techniques and strategies. They can be your best buddies or can act as your worst enemy when it comes to your bowling schemes since it can establish the results of your bowling games.

As mentioned earlier, bowling balls are each specifically created to best fit a bowler’s particular set of choices. Having this in mind, one should carefully select the bowling balls with the exact size and weight specifications that can give you a suitable means of using it on your bowling activities. You should choose balls that are not too heavy for you since it will be devastating on your part, and lighter bowling balls that is way beyond what you need would also cause embarrassment once used in your bowling games.

A good bowling ball is a necessity for bowlers since as experts say; bowlers should need a good ten pin bowling experience. This is the reason why the pros are very particular when selecting their bawling balls. As time goes, bowling balls has transformed significantly, not in shape, but with the supplies that were used in manufacturing.

Looking back in the history of manufacturing bowling balls, it is said that hard rubber balls were used during the 1960’s. During the 70’s polyester were the common used material for hard rubber balls and during the 80’s urethanes took place. Reactive urethanes were the only alteration that took place in the manufacturing of bowling balls. Bowling balls of this era can react well to various types of weather conditions, which give more flexibility to players. With the use of reactive urethane, players can have perfect games. The new reactive urethane cover stock, also known as resin, was freely used blending with inventive core designs, radically changing the mood of the sport. These types of balls improved the quantity of perfect games by nearly 20% and are seen as major success in bowling games during the first season.

So where can I find my bowling balls? First off, you need to accurately identify the exact qualifications that you need on each bowling gears that can essentially provide you with resources to show off your proficiency in the game of bowling during all your bowling schemes.

Next, you must come up with a list of the most dependable sources of the bowling gears that you need as you wouldn’t want your earnings to be wasted in case you buy faulty bowling equipment. Finally, since excessive prices do not necessarily mean high quality, you should be able to carefully assess the price tags of each bowling equipment you need from different bowling manufactures. Perfect games should have perfect bowling balls so you should choose the right quality. The game completely relies on shots that you will make so a good selection of bowling balls plays an important role.

You might ask yourself what to look for in bowling balls. Primarily, weight of the bowling ball plays vital role, so you should choose the right one for your use. Bowling balls usually weighs between 3 pounds to 15 pounds. It is imperative to select a weight that you believe that you are comfortable with and that is not too light or too heavy to bowl with. Secondly, choose the ones that fit very well into your three fingers. Select balls that would fit into your finger easily. This is very crucial since it may result to loose grip while bowling that may result in dropping the ball and a very tight grip may result to a bad throw. Thirdly, you should know the materials used for the bowling balls that you chose. The reactive urethane bowling balls available today are best for balling in different weather conditions. These types of balls do not loose their shape and shine and are considered to be a good buy. You may also want to try the balls first before purchasing in order for you to assess whether it is a good ball or not so have a happy bowling every one….

Riley Hendersen asked:

Many bowlers may take bowling pins for granted. I mean, after all, they are every bowler’s nightmare. The object is to remove them as quickly as possible, so most bowlers may not actually take the time to learn about them.

There are many different types of bowling pin. They are used in a wide variety of bowling games.

The traditional bowling pins that most people think of are the type used in the game of tenpins. Tenpin bowling pins are generally 4.75 inches wide at their widest point and 15 inches tall. They look a bit like armless, legless people, with a “body” and a smaller “head”, or top portion. Most of them also have a reddish colored marking around the “neck”.

A tenpin bowling pin generally weighs 3 pounds and six ounces. However, as of 1998, the American Bowling Congress passed a rule, which allows tenpin bowling pins to weigh 3 pounds and 10 ounces.

Another popular bowling pin is the pin used in duckpin bowling. Duckpins look similar to tenpin pins. However, duckpins are a good deal shorter. Regulation Duckpins are 9 13/32 inches tall, with a maximum diameter of 4 1/8 inches, and a minimum diameter of 1 3/8 inches at the base. Duckpin bowling is most popular along the eastern coast of the United States, in such states ad Virginia.

Candlepin bowling pins are another interesting variety of bowling pins. Candlepin bowling is popular in New England. Candlepin bowling pins are entirely unique. They do not resemble the pins used in any other popular bowling game.

A candlepin bowling pin is the tallest of all at 15-3/4 inches, but only 2-15/16 inches wide and 2 lb, 8 oz in weight. They are almost cylindrical in shape. They are flat on both top and bottom. They do not have a “head” or a “neck” like other pins. In fact, candlepin bowling pins, unlike other types of bowling pins, are reversible. They can be placed on the playing field with either end up. In fact, the name “candlepin bowling” comes from the shape of the pins.

Another interesting fact about bowling pins is that bowling pins are made out of hard rock maple wood. The general shape is glued together and then the pin is turned on a lathe to give it its individual shape. After that, each bowling pin is coated in a plastic material and painted. It is then given a shiny finish.

The wood that is required to make a bowling pin has to be of a certain quality. Any wood will not do, since some are prone to easy chipping. The particular wood required to make bowling pins is very hard to come by. As a result, there have been many efforts to make bowling pins out of other materials, such as plastic. So far, these efforts have not been successful.

I hope you have enjoyed these fun and interesting facts about every bowler’s friend and enemy, the bowling pin.

Mister Sterile asked:

Choosing the set of bowls of the most important issue to face most bowlers when they begin to play the sport.

Yet, judging by the number of people I see whilst coaching and also on my travels, I would estimate that between thirty and forty per cent of them are using the wrong-sized bowls.

The popular method of determining bowls size has been to have the bowler span around the bowl with the middle fingers and the thumb of each hand. If the fingers and thumbs just meet around the running surface the bowl is supposed to be the right size. This theory may work in some cases, but it misleads many people.

I believe the only way to find the correct size is to swing a number of various sized bowls in the hand. With a new player, I would place a bowl in the hand and adjust the fingers to the correct grip that felt comfortable to the player.

Then I would ask the player to swing the hand back to the furthest point on the backswing. If the player feels the bowl may drop, then it is obviously too big. If the bowl can be handled with ease, than a larger size could be tried. Using this method, the player would be able to determine the largest bowl that could be comfortably and effectively used.

The next decision would be whether to use a heavy weight or a medium weight bowl. In the UK, a great number of bowlers actually own two sets of bowls. They may use a heavy weight one on the faster indoor surfaces and then change to a medium weight on the slower outdoor surfaces.

Many other players, including myself, use a heavy weight bowl on both indoor and outdoor surfaces. The heavy weight bowl certainly has advantages on a fast outdoor green on a windy day as they are less liable to be affected by a gusty crosswind. Also the heavy bowl can displace a lighter bowl more easily in the head.

The final decision whether you play with a heavy weight or a medium weight bowl will probably depend on comfort in the hand and whether your wallet can stretch to the purchase of two sets.

Often in the clubs players will argue the merits of one bowls manufacturer against another. The bowls companies all produce a variety of models and all manufactured to a high standard. Choosing any particular model will depend on what suits you best - whether you intend to play indoors and outdoors or you want a bowl specifically for faster indoor greens.

Though many club bowlers do watch the star players perform well on television and often purchase the same models as their favourite players.

These are some of the bowls available from the different companies:

HENSELITE has a wide variety of models, which include the CLASSIC - traditionally the choice for outdoor bowlers in the UK. The bowl has a wide arc and ‘hockey stick’ finish and though good outdoors, may prove a disadvantage on faster indoor surfaces.

The CLASSIC II is regarded by many as the best performing modern bowl. Designed to run straighter, with a less pronounced swing, it is ideal for UK indoor carpets. Many players do use these bowls both indoors and out.

The TIGER is the ‘New Kid on the Block’ and used by many Henselite sponsored players in television events. Greg Harlow and Ian Bond both won World Bowls Tour ranking tournaments last season using this model of bowl. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, this model has a slightly wider bias than the Classic II and is only available in heavyweight.

The DREAMLINE is fairly new to these shores and is a narrow running bowl suitable fr very fast surfaces, and would certainly not be suitable outdoors in early May!

In the ALMARK range, Henselite has three models - the STERLING GOLD for outdoor use with a wide bias; STERLING KING, a narrow running bowl ideal for faster greens, and the STERLING SLIMLINE, a bowl with a narrower profile to fit the hand, but suitable for both codes.

DRAKES PRIDE provides the PROFESSIONAL, which has proved to be a very popular bowl in the UK. This bowl is used by many bowlers, both indoors and outdoors, and is ideal for those players not wishing to purchase two sets. Many top players would agree that this bowl has proved versatile in all conditions and on many different surfaces.

The ADVANTAGE is a tight running bowl and would only prove suitable on faster greens, preferably for front-end players.

The PROFESSIONAL PLUS is an outdoor bowl and would be similar to the Henselite Classic, therefore probably suited to slower outdoor conditions.

THOMAS TAYLOR also provided a wide selection to include its traditional outdoor bowl - the LIGNOID.

The ACE is probably its most popular bowl with many indoor bowlers and is used successfully by twice World indoor champion Andy Thomson. This is another bowl that can also be used successfully outdoors.

The VECTOR has a narrower line and would be popular on fast surfaces, especially for front end players, while the LAZER is a slim profile bowl with a narrow bias similar to the Vector. The advantage of this bowl is that it has been developed for comfort in the hand for those with smaller hands.

THE LEGACY also has a slimmer profile, but unlike the Laser has a wider arc and is considered a mid-bias bowl that could also be used outdoors. Taylor also produced the SPECTRUM and INTERNATIONAL, which are stronger in bias than the Ace.

Many of these bowls are now available in many colours, as well as traditional black, and it would be best to check availability with your local bowls retailer, though always remember that at present coloured bowls are only available in heavy weights and that relevant weight and sizes are published in most bowls catalogues.

This way you can check the relevant weight difference between heavy weight and medium weight bowls. My personal advice to any new bowler would be to select a mid bias bowl that will prove useful on most surfaces, for example Drakes Pride Professional, Henselite Classic II and Tiger and Taylor Ace would fall into this category.

As you gain experience, you may decide to try a narrower running bowl if you have a very fast indoor carpet. One word of warning - many bowlers believe the tight running bowls make the game easier and believe they can virtually bowl straight. That is not the case as in many instances weight control will need to be much better with a narrow running bowl as there is little margin for error and the tight running bowl will not bend with excessive weight.

With so many bowls on the market, always seek advice from a specialist bowls retailer and if possible inquire whether you might be able to try the model you wish to purchase. Sometimes bowls shops based inside indoor stadiums hold sample bowls that can be tried.

Finally, always remember no matter what set of bowls you purchase, you still have to bowl them - sometimes it is easier to blame the bowls when we play a bad game rather than our own poor play.

Jimmy Cox asked:

“Let’s go bowling!” That’s become the rallying cry of almost thirty million Americans throughout the United States who take their exercise in extremely palatable form: rolling a hard rubber ball down sixty feet of maple and pine toward ten standing pins. Today nearly everybody bowls - mother, dad, the kids - the whole family.

Though bowling can trace its beginnings in this country to the time of the earliest colonists in Massachusetts, it wasn’t until the last decade that the sport began to boom. A number of events triggered its rebirth. The first was the introduction, in 1952, of the American Machine & Foundry Company’s Automatic Pinspotter - the remarkable device that resets the pins, announces which ones are knocked down and returns the ball - all automatically.

By replacing the often unreliable pinboy, it thereby made bowling an attractive investment for the entrepreneur. Million dollar bowling centers began to spring up in every section of the country.

And people were waiting for these centers because another factor had whetted their appetite for the sport. That was television. The type of competition bowling offers lends itself remarkably well to TV. Scores and scores of locally originated television programs as well as several full network productions introduced bowling to millions upon millions of Americans who had never been exposed to the fun of knocking down the stubborn tenpins.

Today, nearly thirty million Americans bowl regularly. Of these, approximately ten million are women; one and a half million are children. And there are more than a million new bowlers who take up the sport each year.

Bowling knows no bounds; anyone, at any stage of life, can become its devotee. The handicapped, sometimes even the blind, find fun in the sport. It can be played at any time of the day or night, at any time of the year, and in every section of the country. No other sport qualifies as well for a claim to the title of “national pastime.”

Bowling, like any other sport, has a set of do’s and don’ts that must be followed so that all can enjoy the game. The rules are based on common sense, and express courtesy and good sportsmanship.

Here are ten of the most important ones:

DO yield the “right of way.” When two bowlers are on adjacent lanes, and simultaneously ready to bowl, the bowler on the right delivers first. The other bowler ought to remain off or to the rear of the approach area. This rule doesn’t apply if the bowler on the left is shooting for a spare.

DON’T take a practice swing with your bowling ball on the concourse or behind the approach. Wait until you are up on the approach itself before doing any practice exercises.

DO be ready when it’s your turn to bowl. Remain in your lane area while your teammates are bowling; don’t wander off.

DON’T use an excessive amount of body gyrations at the foul line after delivering the ball. Confine your body “English” to your own lane.

DO bowl immediately when it is your turn. Once you have your ball, assume your stance and start your delivery; it isn’t necessary to wait for lanes on either side of you to be cleared before you bowl - just observe the “right of way” rule.

DON’T bring food or drink into the settee or bowlers’ area. A drop of liquid or any type of foreign substance spilled on the approach could cause a slip and serious injury.

DO wait until you have completed the frame before checking your score. Don’t come back to the scorekeeper after the first ball has been rolled.

DON’T bench jockey while others are bowling. Friendly bantering is an accepted part of the sport, but don’t overdo it. Be a good competitor.

DO return your bowling shoes to the counter control desk after bowling, and if you’ve borrowed a “house ball,” return it to the storage rack.

DON’T linger at the foul line after releasing the ball. As soon as your ball hits the pins return to your seat.

Now you know the etiquette, you will be welcome in any game.

These days, the bowling shirt is not a fashion reserved solely for an evening at the local lanes. With a demand for retro articles, the bowling shirt has experienced greater demand as well. It was in the 1950’s that teenagers and young adults started to don this attire while out and about, as opposed to just in the bowling alley. This opened a new door for the shirt in terms of popularity.

The sport of bowling has been traced back to ancient Egypt, as long ago as 3200 BC; archaeologists have unearthed tombs bearing the remains of games played with pins similar to bowling. It is a timeless game that appeals to all age groups and, even today is enjoyed by millions of people across the country and throughout the world. Although a bowling shirt is not a requirement of play like bowling shoes, it has certainly become associated with the sport of bowling.

The classic shirt has several common characteristics. For starters, it is always a button-up shirt with a collar and a shirt pocket. The color scheme is in block patterns of only two colors. For instance, the shirt may be all black with a white colored pattern; or it may be blue on the back and white on the front. Finally, it is always a short-sleeved shirt crafted in a box cut design. This combination of characteristics makes it extremely recognizable among other shirts.

Bowling enthusiasts who wish to take the design one step further have the option of customizing their shirts. There are many retailers that offer custom embroidery and silk screening; customers provide a shirt and either a picture they wish to have displayed on the back or the print they wish embroidered on the front or back. Often, team or company logos will be added to the back of the bowling shirt for each member of a team to add personality and recognizability. The options surrounding personalization are only limited by your imagination.

Most importantly, the bowling shirt is extremely comfortable, made usually of cotton or a cotton blend. It is also quite a versatile article of clothing. Although not too dressy, these casual shirts are still the equivalent of a polo shirt and certainly a step up from the tee-shirt.

Bowling is a classic sport played by generations of people. Its appeal transcends age, sex, and culture. The sport of bowling includes several components that have come to be part of the American consciousness. Most recognizable are bowling balls, bowling pins, bowling shoes, and the bowling shirt. Bowling balls, as well as bowling pins, can serve very little purpose outside of a bowling alley, with the exception of decoration. Bowling shoes, although not worn outside a bowling alley, have been copied by fashionable sneaker companies such as Converse and Vans. However, the bowling shirt certainly holds a place both inside the bowling alley and out. It’s a stylish shirt that gets noticed wherever you might wear it. It is truly the most versatile element of the sport of bowling.
