The Bowling Coach asked:
Before learning how to play the game, a bowler will need to identify the equipment needed and know how to use it. They should know where to find the necessary equipment, select the right shoe size, choose the right weight of ball to be used, wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the game, and return the equipment to the proper place after the game.
The bowling ball selected must be of the proper weight and grip; the player’s finger size and the space between holes are essential for comfort. Most players use the conventional grip (used in bowling alleys), after fitting the two middle fingers and thumb in the holes, they must test its fit by swinging the ball lightly. Amateurs can find equipment at bowling centers where they can use the equipment for free. However, for advanced and intermediate players, they will want to purchase their own equipment. These players use the Semi-fingertip grips where the thumb and the fore fingers are inserted into the ball’s holes
The usual weight of the ball is approximately 14 to 16 lbs. for males and 10 to 14 lbs. for females. Young players are given the 4 to 6 lb. balls. The swing indicates whether or not the weight of the ball is appropriate for a player. If not, it will cause the shoulder to dip and the player to be out of balance. If the swing causes lofting, it could be too light. The speed of the ball when it is released can also show if it fits the player. Bowling instructors advise professional bowlers to have their own bowling ball which is drilled especially to fit the player’s fingers for consistency and comfort. As with any other sport, strength and physical fitness must be taken into consideration before playing the game.
Aside from the ball, players will need a few other things:
- Bowling shoes - these are designed to allow the player to slide on either foot. The left shoe has a sole that allows the right-handed player to use the five-step approach and vice versa;
- A bowling bag for the ball;
- A rosin bag, which is used by the players to insure that the hands are kept dry; and
- A bowling towel, to get rid of oil and dirt.
To practice, players must make sure that the proper equipment is pre-ordered or reserved to ensure proper hand fit and weight. Ask for assistance from the pro shop staff at the local bowling centers when choosing your equipment. Some bowling centers just charge per game and lend the equipment for free while others rent the equipment. In the long run, when budget permits, confidence is gained when a player owns his equipment. Have fun bowling!

The Bowling Coach asked:
Although not an overly physical game, bowling still requires your body to move in ways that are not considered normal. The very nature of swinging the arm with a weight of the ball at the end and the sliding motion as you move towards the alley puts a considerable amount of stress on your muscles and joints.
It is good practice to do some warm-up exercises before bowling. This will make sure that your muscles are sufficiently warmed up and your joints loose enough for the activities you’re about to perform.
Below are some pointers on how to get started even before you pick up that ball.
- Neck and head.
Tuck your head down towards your chest until you feel a slight pull on the back of your neck. Hold this for about 8 counts then reverse the direction, tilting your head back. Do this for the left and right side of your neck as well.
Shoulders
Place your right arm across your chest, slightly bending it at the elbow, which should be turned away from your body. You should be able to feel the pull at the shoulder joint and sustain it for eight counts. Do the same for the other arm.
Arms
Take one arm and raise it above your head. Then bend it at the elbow, while your opposite arm holds it in place. The pull should be felt in the muscles at the back of your arm. Do the same for the opposite arm with eight counts each.
Back
Hold out both arms in front of you with palms facing outward, link your fingers together and make a pushing action away from your body. You should be able to feel the pull on the muscles in your back, particularly the ones just below your shoulders.
Legs
Place one leg in front of the other and rest both hands on the thigh. Lunge into the front leg, feeling a pull in the calf of the other leg. Keep your back straight when doing this. Hold for eight counts and then switch.
Ankles
Standing up straight, place your hands on your hips (or hold on to something for balance) and raise one leg up, bending at the knee. Point your toes to the floor, and then rotate your foot to loosen up the ankles. Do this for about eight counts clockwise and then another eight in the opposite direction. Repeat for the other foot.
An adequate warm up routine will help ensure you that your body will not feel as much stress from your game. You will see results not only during the game, but also well after you’re done playing.

Riley Hendersen asked:
Many people may assume that all bowling shoes are alike. The average person, when they picture bowling shoes, thinks of ugly, tattered, sometimes bad-smelling monstrosities that pinch the feet or fall off in mid-step. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. Even the most casual bowler can easily improve their over all comfort and accuracy by buying their own shoes.
To begin with, many people simply find the idea of rented shoes unsanitary. Even though any reputable bowling alley keeps their shoes as clean as possible, some people just do not like the idea of going bowling, simply because they **** sharing shoes. By buying your own shoes, you will avoid this issue.
The biggest advantage to owning your own bowling shoes is having shoes that fit your feet properly. Bowling alley shoes are often not sized the same as normal footwear, so ever trip to the bowling alley can be a struggle to find a shoe that fits.
Even if you know what your bowling shoe size is, a bowling alley may be out of your particular shoe size, so you might be forced to wear a larger shoe. This can drastically change your ability to line up your bowling approach properly. When you bring your own shoes when you bowl, you will completely eliminate this problem and increase your bowling ability.
Another advantage of owning your own bowling shoes is the condition of the shoes. Rental shoes often have missing or deterioration Velcro or frayed laces. They also generally have worn out soles, which can easily cause problems with a person’s bowling approach. If you have your own shoes, you are in complete control of their condition.
For a person who bowls on a regular basis, owning your own bowling shoes can cut both costs and time. You will no longer have the cost of renting shoes every time you bowl. You will also no longer need to deal with the time involved in trying on multiple pairs of shoes every time you bowl in order to find shoes that just barely work for you. When buying your own bowling shoes, you should consider the cost as it relates to the time spent.
For the more casual bowler, less expensive shoes may be the better option. For someone who bowls regularly, a top of the line shoe may be better. It’s also important to note that one bowling shoe is usually for sliding, while the other is for breaking.
As a result, there are shoes for left-handed bowlers and shoes for right-handed bowlers. Be sure to purchase shoes that are appropriate for you. Some bowlers may also opt to buy shoes with extra features, such as padded insoles. These features can often help to increase both comfort and accuracy.
Another interesting feature of owning your own bowling shoes is personality. Most of us can agree that the most bowling alley shoes are not only usually overly used, but also quite ugly. Having your own shoes allows you to exhibit your own personality and style. Some people prefer a simple style. Others opt for bright and colorful. Whatever your choice is, you can bet that it’ll beat the looks of rental shoes.

IC asked:
A lot of bowlers have already started to shop bowling shoes online. For a bowler, the most important equipment for the game is the ball. However, there is something else beyond that. A bowler must always have a good pair of bowling shoes. Picking out a pair of bowling shoes online has been a trend for most bowlers. Bowling shoes play an important role for all bowlers no matter how and where the game is played. Buying the right bowling shoes online could take time and careful consideration. It is better to have your own shoes rather than rentals.
The very first thing to consider in buying bowling shoes online is the website and the seller of bowling shoes. You have to make sure that the seller is legitimate and licensed. You do not want to make a purchase with a seller who only scams you. A lot of people get victimized by unruly and illegitimate sellers. They are very much convinced to give out their personal information and credit card numbers on the website and later find out that they were fooled. You can do a background check of the website by reading some reviews and testimonials. Make sure that the website holds Internet privacy laws and they do real business and not monkey business.
If you already have the website, the next thing that you must do is setting a budget for the bowling shoes. A lot of them may be costly but there are also some with affordable price and with good quality. Another thing that you must consider is the style of the bowling shoes that would match the way you throw the ball. Choose a bowling shoe style that would help you improve your playing better. This is quite a simple thing but serious players really do take time to choose the best style not just for fashion sake but for the game in general. It is also important to consider the time that you wish to spend playing bowling. If you are the type who plays for long hours, then you should settle for expensive bowling shoes, those that are durable and can last for years even how often you use them. However, if you are the type who just wants to past the time in playing bowling, go for bowling shoes that cost lesser. But be sure that you never compromise quality with the cost.
Getting your very own bowling shoes has good benefits. It allows you to save the money that you will pay in daily or weekly rentals. Sanitation is also a very good advantage of having your won bowling shoes. Just imagine renting bowling shoes that has been used so many times by a lot of people. Even though it has been disinfected, still it is not a guarantee. And lastly, you will feel really comfortable with your own shoes.
The Internet has a lot to offer. Often times you would even get discounts in shopping online rather than going for a real store. Having you own pair of bowling shoes is quite an investment. So, if you plan to purchase a pair of bowling shoes online, you have to make sure that the website you are in will give you the benefit that you deserve.
