Get That Strike in Bowling
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
The Bowling Coach asked:
Many bowlers aspire to have consistent strikes in bowling but their schedules may not allow them to practice in a bowling alley as frequently as they would like. There are many ways bowlers can practice and improve their performance even if they are away from the bowling lanes. Visualize the performance of consistent strikes that every bowler dreams of making. Here are some helpful tips on how to get the strikes even when not in the lanes.
The home can be a suitable venue to practice in place of the bowling lanes. Find a place in the house where the floor is vinyl, hardwood, tile or any flooring that is similar to the texture of the bowling lanes.
Make a “T” shape using a tape or any marker to mark the place as the starting position. The player may then put his toes on the top of the “T” that he improvised. He will then be able to figure out his ideal step and mark the exact spot where he can make his first step.
He can then proceed practicing by visualizing the bowling action and getting the strike. Repeat the first step several times to become consistent with the move. It is important not to look down at the marker he made each time he takes that step. He should be able to master the exact location of the ideal step he has assigned in the marker. The repetition will allow him to perfect his step.
He may also perform his moves on the imaginary lane that he made. He can do the moves even without a ball or he can improvise with any round object that can roll and has the same weight as a standard bowling ball. He can imagine the lane, focus at the center of the imaginary lane, and think that there are pins standing on it. Practice the backswing and hook techniques by imagining throwing a ball at a specific target.
Practicing at home is a great way to master the skills and get consistent strikes when bowling. Bowling requires focus and imagination and practicing at home using the improvised lane is one good way to stay focused and be imaginative.

The Proper Bowling Stance Explained
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
Jimmy Cox asked:
Because it is the first step in bowling, the stance is one of the most important phases of the bowling game. It’s the point of origin and should be standardized.
You should have a very definite way to place your feet every time you go up to bowl. The ball should always be held in the same place in respect to your body.
Above all, both of these factors should be maintained so that you are the most comfortable. If you’re comfortable, you’re not even going to notice the weight of the ball. You’re off on the “right foot” because you have already learned how to stand. Certainly, the first few times you try to bowl, even if your stance is comfortable, you’re going to be nervous; you’re trying something new. But if you are comfortable up there, that nervousness won’t stay with you very long.
Presuming you are a four-step bowler, go to the foul line, turn around so that your heels are about four or five inches away from the line and then take four normal steps away from the lane. Then take an extra half-step for good measure to allow for your slide.
Wherever you are at this point, turn around and face the lane. Look down at your feet. Where they are is your point of origin and it won’t vary no matter when or where you bowl. Your distance from the foul line should thus be determined, whether you are shooting for strikes or spares.
However, in this day and age, because of new and fancy ball returns, change in surroundings from one house to another, etc., it is suggested that you always pace off this distance from the foul line before taking your stance.
If you are a three-step bowler, pace off three and one half steps. If you use five steps, pace off five and one half, etc. Now you are in the proper position to take your stance.
If you are right-handed, make sure your left foot is a few inches ahead of your right foot. It will make for more comfort. Also as a beginner, have your left foot either in line with the center of the lane or slightly to the right of center. Your shoulders should be parallel to the foul line. Now you’re ready to consider what stance you should use.
Basically, there are only three types of stance. In one, the ball is held in front of the face, leaving just enough room for the eyes so you can see where you’re going. A second stance has the ball held so that its base is about even with the bowler’s waist. A third stance has the ball held low and at arm’s length.
So far as the position of the body is concerned, comfort is the whole thing. Some bowlers find it more comfortable to stand up straight; others bend over slightly and still others lean way over.
Each has its advantages, but a slight bend at the waist is favored by most top bowlers. Most beginners are inclined to stand erect. There’s nothing really wrong with this, but don’t hold yourself to it. Try the other styles and determine which is most comfortable and produces the highest pinfall.
During the past several years, another style has come into being and it has several variations. A few of our leading bowlers hold the ball well over on the right side (being right-handed, of course), claiming that this allows them to go into their swing with greater ease.
Choose one of these stances that are most comfortable to you and stay with it. Remember practice makes perfect.

The General And Necessary Bowling Tips

Mitch Johnson asked:
How to hit every spare dead centre, using the best angle to get strikes and spares, how to improve with your control and consistency, etc. are some of the things that we tried to help gives more clarification.
Try to hit every spare “dead center.” Do not be satisfied with merely converting the spare in any fashion at all. Concentrate on the exact spot you wish to hit. It stands to reason that if you are hitting the key pin on the wrong side and still managing to convert the spare through a lucky bounce off the kickback or in some other fashion, you are courting disaster. Bowling is a game in which the law of averages inevitably takes its toll. You cannot keep on being lucky forever. So shoot to make your spares correctly. “Cover” your pins.
Finishing properly is just as important as starting properly. Getting started on the correct foot, using a smooth push away to get the ball in motion, timing the movement of your hands and body, and other such procedures do little good if you suddenly decide at the last second to “overpower the pins.” You might succeed in getting a strike on that particular throw (you will note I didn’t say “roll”), but in so doing you are asking for trouble in succeeding frames, for you have thrown your timing off and may find it difficult to regain it. Remember to check yourself occasionally on the various phases of finishing properly making sure that you are not falling into bad habits.
Use the best angle to get strikes and spares Because of the angle at which the ball strikes the pins, it would not do for the average bowler rolling a hook or curve to start his delivery from the extreme left side of the approach. On the other hand, a bowler using a backup delivery (one that fades to the right), should not begin from the middle. In shooting at spares, remember to “give the ball all the alley space possible.” For the 7-pin, you should begin your roll from the right-hand side. For the 10-pin, start from the left-hand side, and so on. The 6-10 spare, for instance, should be played from the left-hand side so that the ball not only takes advantage of the width of the lane but also comes into the pins at a better angle to topple the 10-pin after hitting the 6-pin. Always bear in mind that your percentage of scoring is increased when you play from the proper angle. Control and consistency give bowling improvement. Even the poorest bowlers sometimes roll a 200 game, but the better bowlers, and in particular the experts, do it often. The star bowler depends upon his control and consistency to keep his average high. But he wasn’t born with either. He had to develop both over a long period of time and through plenty of practice. Actually, consistency means the ability to use your control time after time. So keep after your game and be willing to practice. It will pay dividends in higher scores.
Overturning a ball is easier than turning it properly If you observe the topnotchers closely, you will see that they try to put just as much “stuff” on the ball as possible without losing control. It is unfortunately true that all too many low-average bowlers simply try to put a lot of “stuff” on the ball without regard for control of the tricky delivery. The fallacy of this lies in their trying to impress their friends or in seeking to take a “short cut” to high scoring by trying to master this difficult delivery before they have even come close to mastering the simple fundamentals of approach and delivery.
Perfection in fundamentals means higher scores The success of one very famous collegiate football team may be traced, in part, to the idea of its coaches that a team well versed in fundamentals can beat the biggest or trickiest of foes. Consequently, when this school’s first football practice is called each season, every man, regardless of his ability in high school or in previous college years, is given a thorough and painstaking grounding in such fundamentals as blocking and tackling. Bowling is exactly the same. The more perfect your grasp of fundamentals, the more consistently high scores you will roll, for you are then repeating, time after time after time, the same exact steps, the same swing of the ball in rhythm with the hands, body and feet, the same backswing and the same release. You will be as close to a machine as it is possible to get.
It is very important to keeps your basics right when playing the bowling game. And perfecting the fundamentals could means higher scores. So makes it sure that you are well aware of the basic tricks of the game of bowling to score high points when the next time you go for playing it.

5 Bowling Tips for Beginners
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
Bill Weaver asked:
When a person is a beginner at bowling, there are a number of details at which he should work and of which he should think, if he wishes to bowl correctly and to improve quickly. I have listed below a number of these details and, if strict attention is paid to them, the average beginner may cut his “apprenticeship” to a fraction of the time ordinarily spent in learning the game.
1. Bowling Fundamentals come first.
Check constantly on the fundamentals which are the very backbone of your game. Once you have mastered these fundamentals, you can move on to finer bowling such as playing alleys, etc. You cannot do these until you have perfected your fundamentals. They are the ABC’s of bowling.
2. Use a straight ball until you become consistent.
This is good advice unless you have a natural hook. You can learn to control a straight ball quicker and you can learn to hit spares sooner. You can also concentrate on fundamentals at the same time, which is a difficult job when one is trying to throw a hook or curve. After you have mastered the straight ball, you can start putting “stuff” on the ball.
3. Experiment with a three-step, four-step and a five-step delivery.
You will need to experiment until you find the delivery best suited to you. For the average bowler, the following distances are approximately correct for the starting position in the various deliveries: For a three-step, eight to ten feet from the foul line; for a four-step, ten to twelve feet back; and for a five-step, twelve to sixteen feet. These distances apply to a bowler of average size and stride. If your own size and stride are not average, make your own adjustments to fit.
4. Do not release the bowling ball until after it has passed your left foot.
You have two advantages here. First, the ball is out on the alley bed where it should be, and second, it is in front of you, giving you a better direction on your target.
Just how far past the foul line the ball should be released varies with the size of the bowler, the speed with which he approaches the foul line, the speed and length of his footwork, and the number of steps taken. A six-foot man, for instance, with long arms and long legs, might naturally release the ball two feet past the foul line, while a five-footer, who has short arms and takes short steps, might release it two inches past the line. Each man is correct.
5. Work to perfect a natural, easy delivery.
The only way to learn consistency is to bowl naturally with an easy style that allows you to be more consistent and to hold that consistency. Be natural-don’t try to ape a delivery just because some expert may be using it. Use your own style.

Types of Bowling Pins
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
The Bowling Coach asked:
Bowling pins are necessary for the game of bowling as they are the objects that are to be aimed at, hit, and knocked down - the target. The bowling ball knocks down pins to produce the score. The scoring may vary depending on whether the person is playing ten-pin bowling or five-pin bowling.
The commonly used pins are 4.75 inches in their width and they stand 15 inches in height. Their standard weight is 3lb. 6oz. but there are also pins that are now allowed (beginning in 1998) that weighs 3lb. and 10oz.
Bowling pins are made by gluing blocks of hard maple wood together. Makers of bowling pins use these blocks to create the pin shape by using a lathe. The formed shape will then be coated with hard layers of plastic material and are painted white to produce a finished product that is shiny and pleasing to the eye.
The ABC (American Bowling Congress) is an institution that specifies how the pins are to be made - according to their set standards. They are also the one responsible for checking the bowling alleys and the bowling lanes for compliance. Some venues may not have strict regulations or enforcement of pin shapes and sizes or the pin setting machine. These irregularities (if any) would affect every delivery of the ball as well as the scoring.
There are three types of pins that are commonly used in bowling. The first type is the Vulcan Vultex 2. This type of pin is popular with many bowling venues. They like its structure and that it is made with a molding that has a surlyn coating and it looks hard and heavy duty product. Although it can be one of the best pins to buy, the company that produces it eventually sold its rights to Brunswick.
The second type of pin is the Brunswick PBA gold pin. It weighs 3 lbs. 10 oz. and is much heavier than a regular pin. It features a colored PBA logo because these pins are standardized and are used only in tournaments set by the PBA. They also have pins that have logos on the bottom of the pin that may be used in a regular bowling game.
The third type of pin is the Wimsom pin. Brunswick has incorporated its production to the Brunswick “Max”, with a trade mark logo on it. The cheap price of this pin surpassed the sales of the Canadian rock maple pins which are mostly exported to several Asian countries.

The Right Dog Bowls For Your Pets
Filed Under Pets | Comments Off
Mike Brown asked:
Buying the proper to all bowls for your dog is extremely important. If you are using the wrong size bowl for your dog this may create problems while he is trying to eat. For instance, the dog bowl may skid across the floor, if the animal is too large for it. When the dog has his nose in the bowl and begins to push it across the floor because he/she simply has trouble accessing the food in the dish.
You’ll want to prevent this by looking at a bowl’s dimensions and figuring out which size bowl is right for your dog. For a large dog you’ll want a bowl around 10-12 inches in diameter. Whereas for a small dog about 4-6 inches in diameter and of course a medium size dog should fall somewhere between the two.
Many times if the dog is to large for any given bowl they begin the scoot the dish across the floor which can lead to skidding. A solution to this problem is first, buy a larger bowl for your dog. This allows your pet more access to the food in the container and he/she isn’t having to force their snout to the bottom of the bowl to eat. Secondly consider buying a non skid dog bowl. These heavy bowls help prevent the dog from moving the dish and often times contain small pads on the bottom of the dog bowl to further increase its staying power.
Another issue that can occur when feeding your dog, is bowl tipping. Bowl tipping can be a very irritating problem. Basically while your dog begins eating the end up tipping the bowl over. A very nice solution to this problem is to buy a non-tip dog bowl, which as you may have guessed will prevent your dog from tipping the bowl over. This will solve two problems, you’ll be happier and your pet won’t be running all over trying to pick up the pieces of food it just tipped over.
Another problem when dog bowl selecting is buying bowls if you have multiple puppies. This can get expensive so an easy solution is to buy a flying saucer style of bowl. Flying saucer dog bowls often come in a stainless steel layout and are open around the edges. In the middle of the bowl is a raised nose which makes this dog bowl look similar to a bunt cake pan. This type of dog bowl allows your puppies access to the food from every side, making this perfect for multiple pets. You may also consider using a double diner dog bowl when you have more than one small dog or puppy. Double diners sit into a small platform and are two bowls in either side of each other. This style of dog bowl allows bowl dogs to eat side by side at the same time and works perfectly for smaller dogs.
If you are going away for a few days or prefer to fill up your dog bowl and not have to deal with refilling it every other day then this next dog bowl may be perfect for you. Twenty-four hour dog feeders are idea for owners who have trouble feeding their dog every single day or just prefer not to. You put the dog food into a dispenser and as the dog eats food flows automatically back into the bowl. This also helps dogs who eat fast to keep from eating so quickly. As the food flows slowly into the bowl.
Decorative designer dog bowls also exist for anyone who prefers their house and dog dish have style together. Often times designer dog bowls are made of stoneware or ceramics. However these type of dog bowls can be found in many different shapes, styles and sizes.
Next time you are shopping for a dog bowl keep these tips in mind. Finding the perfect bowl for your dog will also benefit you and the needs of your household. Most dog bowls are inexpensive and replaceable quickly.

Most dog bowls are inexpensive and replaceable quickly.

fight19eightyfive asked:
My brothers used the oven to de-oil bowling balls. I want to know if this is unsafe and can it contaminate food made in there later and hurt me?
Well this has me worried because my mother already used the oven for dinner and we ate it. I didn’t think about the bowling balls until now though.

What is the best beginner’s bowling ball?

Alex F asked:
I want to buy my own, fitted bowling ball. I’ve heard that house balls are made of plastic, and I should get a better quality ball if I want to improve my hooking. I also want to avoid breaking the bank when buying this ball as bowling is my only inexpensive hobby.

How to Choose Bowling Equipment
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
The Bowling Coach asked:
When bowling, one must use the proper equipment to achieve the best results. It is a fun game, but having the right equipment is not about taking the fun out of bowling, it is to ensure that one plays with comfort and avoids injuries when playing.
Here are some tips on how to properly choose bowling equipment:
Bowling Ball
Bowling balls are the heart of the game of bowling. Bowling balls can make one’s game or break his arms. Make sure that you use the proper bowling balls while playing.
-A bowler must make sure that he is using the right kind of ball. Right-handed players should use balls which are made for the right-handed and left-handed players should use balls for the lefties. There’s a slight difference in the distances of the finger holes between the two balls.
-As a general rule, people can use balls which weight up to 10% of their total body weight. A kid who weighs 70 pounds can use a 7 pound ball, anything above that should be replaced by a lighter ball.
-One must also assess his level of playing. There are different kinds of balls for different kinds of players. There’s the beginner line, the intermediate and professional line. Balls for the beginners are usually easier to handle, the intermediate ones have more power and the balls for the professionals are made for high performance and are usually the most expensive ones.
Wrist support
A bowler may choose to use a wrist support when bowling. This equipment trains the wrist to bowl with the proper form. Using this regularly will improve one’s game. The wrist support should fit perfectly and the proper size to hug the wrist. One must not feel any discomfort or pain when using wrist supports.
Shoes
Having the right kind of shoes in bowling is an advantage. Shoes which are rented in bowling alleys can distract a player because of their improper size. Some rented shoes are itchy and this can further distract the player.
There is other equipment that is available for bowling fanatics:
-Bowling pins
-Bowling gloves
-Bowling bags
One must remember that having the right equipment is not the key to true success in bowling. Yes, they are tools which can make someone’s game better, but bowling requires passion and dedication and one must be able to enjoy the game to be successful in it.
