The Basics of Bowling: it All Boils Down to Ball Fitting
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
The Bowling Coach asked:
Learning the basics of bowling is never a difficult task. If one is eager to learn the basics of bowling, he can start by focusing on the selection of a ball the fits properly.
The first step in choosing the right bowling ball is determining if the ball feels right to the one who will use it. Many players opt to use the same ball whenever they bowl after they find they like. When they feel comfortable using a particular ball it affects their bowling performance. The weight of the ball must be considered as it has a great impact on the bowlers balance. The ball should not be too heavy for the bowler’s size. If the bowler does not have balance, the performance may be less than desired. This is why it is important to choose a ball that is right for the weight of the bowler.
The fit of the ball should be the primary concern in the selection of a ball. The ball should follow the configuration of the bowler’s hands. The holes’ sizes and the distances between them should be in accordance with the normal grip of the bowler and may vary depending on which grip he/she may use.
Inserting a good portion of the finger in the holes will allow a better grip of the ball and is why it is important that the finger fit comfortably in the holes. However, the holes should not be too big for the fingers. An improper fit causes a tendency for the grip to be loose or the fingers to slide when swinging the ball.
The bowling ball is an important consideration when learning the bowling basics. The ball should perfectly fit the fingers to have a better grip of the ball. Having a better grip allows a better release and enhances the performance.
When a person knows how to choose a ball that is right for him/her, then it is easier for him/her to perform the moves and strategies needed. Bowling will never be difficult as long as he/she knows the basics of bowling, and chooses the right ball.

Is it morally correct to build a private bowling alley in your home?
Filed Under Law & Ethics | Comments Off
Arthur asked:
Americans consume way too much energy. They are currently the primary source for the causes of gobal warming. And now this: indoor professional basketball courts, indoor firing ranges, 200,000 dollar car condos to store extra vehicles. You might say, hey if they can afford it, why not. Well they are not paying for the damage that they are doing to the earth. If they did maybe a 60,000 dollar Humvee would cost 600,000 dollars. Is it right for people to install a bowling alley in there own home?
Considerably less energy is used to go see a movie in a public theater then build your own theater at home. The building of a firing range uses resources in it’s construction. Wood, cement, plastics, electric motors, etc. If you calculate the energy and resources spent it would be considerable.

Bowling Supply 101: Things to Start the Ball Rolling
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
The Bowling Coach asked:
At one time in the past bowling was the object of many “spoofs”, particularly on the big screen where it was portrayed as a humorous activity. That is no longer true.
There are approximately 100 million people all over the world playing this ancient Egyptian game. Historians found that the earliest form of bowling was recorded in the year 3200 B.C.
The pleasant characteristics of the bowling game are the primary reason it has continued to exist. It is a game that anyone can enjoy without having to consider the day, the time, or the weather.
Knowing the basic rules of playing the game is essential. The other necessities are the supplies you must have. These supplies are carefully and artistically to fit the individual needs of each bowler.
The Importance of Owning Bowling Supplies
Bowling supplies are not manufactured just to satisfy the market demand but are designed to suit the personal requirements of each bowler. If you are a serious bowler it is important to purchase your personal equipment and supplies. By doing this you not only promote personal hygiene but comfort as well.
Why?
This is because most of the bowling supplies are should be custom-made to fit the individual bowler’s needs. For instance, bowling balls should be made so that they fit the hands of the user or the bowler. In turn, this will promote easier handling and better control.
To perform well a bowler must have the right supplies. Those who are not familiar with the sport of bowling tend to buy inappropriate equipment because they are uninformed or wish to appear “trendy”. Money is easily wasted and injuries occur in this case.
Where to Buy
Bowling supplies are generally available in bowling centers or in bowling pro shops. You can probably find a bowling pro shop near where you can order or acquire the supplies that you need. You can ask them to assist you in selecting the equipment and supplies that will work best for you. Choosing bowling supplies is not as easy as 1-2-3 but the best thing about it is that knowing that by choosing the right ones and learning how to use them properly will be very useful in playing the game. At the same time you will buy only what is needed and save money. When properly prepared, you can trigger your quest for success.

Tips for Bowling - Beginners Bowling Guide to Consistent Strikes and Spares
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
Sean Bailey asked:
Bowling strikes and cleaning up spares require that you concentrate and relax throughout your bowling motions. In case you don’t know yet, a strike is when you knock down all ten pins on your first attempt. A spare is when you knock down all ten pins over the course of your two attempts. It is very hard to score points in bowling when you fail to at least get a spare.
The first step to good bowling is learning to recognize the condition of the bowling lane. You need to take note of whether the lane is oily, with balls sliding a lot, or dry, with balls mostly rolling. Neither one of them is any easier than the other, but you do need to realize which you are dealing with.
Always visualize yourself bowling the strike or spare before you make an attempt. You want to then go out and make your attempt just like you visualized, so it is important that your visualized attempt included a smooth motion and a proper release. After proper visualization, you just go out and do what you visualized. A benefit to visualizing this way is that you are always making your attempts at strikes and spares with a clear plan in mind of how the ball will travel and how you will hit the pins. The biggest mistake a new bowler can make is just trying to toss a bowling ball down the center of the lane and hoping it hits something, without any specific goal in mind.
It used to be the hardest part of learning how to bowl was keeping score. It is truly a complex game to learn how to score in the beginning, but fortunately nearly all bowling alleys now feature computers that calculate your scores for you. The important thing to remember is that you get a lot of bonus points beyond the number of pins you hit when you hit consecutive strikes. You want to at least get spares when you can’t get strikes or you could find yourself ending with a double digit score. You might note someone calling you a turkey or a chicken during the game. Don’t worry, those are compliments in bowling. A turkey is three strikes in a row, while a chicken is three spares in a row.
Beginners should really concentrate more on learning to throw the ball straight. Spins are more for the professionals, and you can hurt yourself twisting your wrist instead of your fingers. It isn’t unusual for a beginner to score in the triple digits by simply throwing a plastic ball straight towards the pins of choice. This is particularly true when trying to clean up with a spare. The best part of a plastic ball that travels straight is that the type of surface doesn’t need to be gaged and calibrated in order to bowl straight. You can always learn how to play with hooks after you are consistently a triple digit bowler, but the straight shots will still serve you well.

Learning to Bowl
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
The Bowling Coach asked:
Bowling is one of the easiest sports to learn. It has been around for centuries and is played by professionals and amateurs worldwide. The best place to practice is at the bowling alley where a friend or an instructor can teach you everything about the game in a few hours.
Bowling alleys have balls and shoes that customers can borrow/rent off the racks. After determining the right shoe size and the weight of the ball to use, it is time to go to the lane and start practicing. It is advisable to get a lane far from other people to avoid distractions.
A lot of people achieve strikes or even spares not because of talent but out of sheer luck. A beginner should not feel discouraged when he can only bring a few pins down or when the ball goes down the gutter since this is perfectly normal. By listening to the instructor and focusing on each shot, the score will gradually improve and be better than those bowlers who have no training.
The bowling ball is a spherical object that has holes to allow the person to get a good grip before releasing it. It involves inserting the player’s middle and ring fingers into the holes and there are three ways to do this.
The first is the conventional grip which lets the person put the two fingers in the holes up to the second joint. The second is the finger tip grip which puts the two fingers in the holes until the first joint. The third is called the Sarge-Easter Grip where the two fingers are in one hole but this grip is only used by experienced players.
The conventional and the finger tip grip will usually be introduced by the instructor. The player will then choose which is more comfortable. Players usually take three steps forward before releasing the ball. This makes proper approach and follow through important to be able to hit the pins a few yards away. This can be done by using the arrows, markers and dots to guide the ball to its target.
To become as good as the pros won’t happen overnight. It will take a lot of time and practice to do the proper drills in order to get it right. Aside from the instructor, another person that can help is the lane operator. These people are there every day and learning a trick or two can improve one’s game.
